For authors, media coverage and book reviews make all the difference. And with review spaces disappearing and arts coverage still shrinking all the time, I can't stress enough how much we appreciate when someone decides to take the time to review our work. This post is long overdue (the side-effect of completing a school practicum while promoting a book), but here are a few of the wonderful bits of coverage Ellis on Guard has received (thank you to all)!
Quill & Quire 2026 Spring Preview "Q&Q presents the young readers titles we’re most excited about this spring."
Canlit for Little Canadians: "Sal Sawler sensitively takes Ellis in small steps from worrisome to attentive beyond the worries. Once Ellis realizes that they can do good, they put aside the worry and step up to be the protector they envision themself to be."
Canadian Children's Book Centre Experts' Pick: "Sawler's portrayal of Ellis is the perfect blend of lighthearted and sensitive. Sawler ably demonstrates that although Ellis's worries can be a challenge, they can also be a positive thing too, giving them a heightened awareness of the people and things around them, and helping them to develop the ability to plan and to problem solve in creative ways. Charming and affirming, Ellis is a character that many readers of all ages will relate to and be inspired by."
49th Shelf Winter 2026 Top Grade Pick: "Teachers can use Ellis's story to normalize worry, to let students know that everybody worries sometimes. It's okay to feel that way, and it's important to talk about it when you do."
True North Country Comics: On editing graphic novels and writing picture books.
